Evolving from a predominantly import-dependent military force, the defence sector has shifted to becoming one that is self-reliant. This transformation has been driven by the Indian government’s continued emphasis on innovation, strategic partnerships, and indigenous capabilities for robust defence infrastructure. As one of the strongest military powers globally, it plays a crucial role in ensuring regional security; however, the complex nature of its supply chain, which spans a wide range of equipment, its components, and ammunition, presents significant challenges. These challenges include a lack of unit-level traceability, real-time coordination, inefficient inventory management systems, inaccurate demand forecasting and a lack of an efficient product recall system.
To address these challenges, it was required to adopt standards-based digital supply chain management practices, which would result in improved responsiveness and traceability. GS1 standards play an important role in enhancing India’s defence capabilities. It helps navigate these challenges by offering GS1 standards-based solutions to enhance traceability, accuracy, and efficiency.
